Today we spent some time on current events issues.  As a way of rounding out our week, we took time to organize our notebooks. Next week, we will begin our study of governments in the Middle East. 

Homework:  Have a SAFE evening!!!

After our Locations Quiz, we continued our discussion about the Suez Canal and the Aswan High Dam.  We also discussed foreign control, government changes, and major events in the history of modern Egypt.  The students also found out why and how the Suez Canal came under British control. 

Homework:  Answer the following questions.  Use pages 462-467 of your text for help if needed. 

1.  What were Nasser's major achievements?

2.  How have Egyptian women's rights improved over the last century?

3.  What has Egypt done to improve the search for peace in the region?

 

After our warmup the students spent time working with their 3 o'clock appointment.  Together, they completed a sequencing activity where they placed events that occurred in Palestine and Israel in chronological order. 

Homework:  Read pages 462 - 467

Today's agenda included a short review before our vocabulary quiz, then another vocabulary building activity that relates to our unit of study in Chapter 16.

Today, we read about how the United Nations tried to ease problems in Palestine by dividing it into two parts.  Students spent some time discussing the political conflict over this region.  In an attempt to review our vocabulary terms, students got the opportunity to exchange the quiz they made with a classmates quiz.  They scored the quizzes and gave each other positive feedback and realized they knew more than they expected when it came to their vocabulary.  The quizzes looked great.   

Homework:  There are no written assignments tonight, but students should study for their Ch 16 vocabulary quiz...Monday 10/27.

After today's warmup, students spent time reviewing their vocabulary terms for Ch 16.  All students were given at least fifteen minutes of class time to work on tonight's homework, which is to create a vocabulary quiz that can be taken by one of their classmates.  We also spent some time organizing our interactive notebooks. 

Homework:  Create a quiz for your Ch 16 vocabulary terms. Remember to use all 22 words.

Today the students completed their postcards about "Impressions of the Middle East". In the postcard, they compare three cultural similarities and three cultural differences that are noticed between the Middle East and the U.S.  All assignments are due by the end of class tomorrow. 

Homework: 

1.  Read page 454 - Skillbuilder (Reading a Historical Map) - Complete the bottom of page - Practicing the Skill.  Your paragraph shoud be 5-7 sentences long.

2.  Ch 16  Vocabulary Quiz is next Monday 10/27/08 - use your flashcards to help you study!!!

Today we completed our journey through several Middle Eastern countries as we observed similarities and differences between their culture and ours.  The students were then assigned their postcard project.  The cultural impressions postcard will be completed Monday. Rubrics and assignment requirements were given to students, so drafts of the message they'll write on their postcards, should be finished this weekend.  Thank you Ms. Harpin for creating our postcard templates, the students are enjoying this project.

Homework: 

Bring postcard drafts to class Monday (messages only... we'll find pictures on the computer)

Study for Ch 16 Vocabulary Test - Monday, Oct 27th 

Homework:  Read pages 455-459 of your textbook.  Answer question 2 on page 459

Today the students took a test over Ch 15.  The vocabulary terms for Ch 16 were given and should be made into flash cards.
